Creating the Perfect Coffee Nook in Your Home | Open vs. Hidden Coffee Nook
There’s something about starting your day with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee in a space that’s been thoughtfully designed just for that moment. Whether you’re a casual coffee drinker or can’t start your day without it, having a dedicated coffee nook in your home can elevate your morning routine. When it comes to creating the perfect coffee nook in your home, there are two main approaches: one that is open and inviting, and one that is tucked away and hidden when not in use. Both have their own unique benefits and can be tailored to fit your lifestyle and kitchen design. Below you’ll see both options from two recent design projects, Project Canyon Sol and Project Paseo.
The Open Coffee Bar: Project Canyon Sol
For those who take pride in their coffee-making ritual and enjoy having their tools and supplies on display, an open coffee bar is a wonderful addition. In Project Canyon Sol, the client wanted to create a dedicated space where she could relax and enjoy her morning cup of coffee, with everything she needed easily accessible and on display.
We incorporated a sleek Miele built-in coffee system, which not only adds a touch of luxury to the space but also ensures that the coffee-making process is seamless and efficient. The system is integrated into custom cabinetry, creating a cohesive look that blends perfectly with the rest of the kitchen. We also created a distinct area from the rest of the kitchen cabinetry for displaying coffee cups. This defined space makes it clear that this is a special spot dedicated to relaxing and enjoying a cup of coffee.
An open coffee bar can serve as a focal point in your kitchen, adding visual interest and a sense of purpose to the space. If you are considering an open coffee bar area, here are a few other tips and ideas to consider!
Open Shelving
Include open shelves for displaying and storing coffee cups and other essentials. This can be done to match any style and aesthetic and is a great way to showcase your style or personality. I love this option for displaying your favorite coffee mugs, further personalizing your home. Open coffee bars also provide easy access, as everything you need is within reach.
Fun Backsplash
You can further personalize the area and make a statement by adding fun and eye-catching tile for the backsplash! This is another wonderful way to inflict some personality and charm to your coffee nook.
Soft Lighting
Incorporating soft, warm lighting in the coffee nook sets a calm and quiet tone, making it the perfect spot to ease into your day. The lighting helps create an inviting atmosphere, whether it’s early morning or late at night.
The Hidden Coffee Nook: Project Paseo
For those who prefer a clean, minimalistic kitchen but still want the convenience of a coffee nook, a hidden coffee bar is the perfect solution. In Project Paseo, the client wanted the option to tuck away the coffee-making essentials when they weren’t in use, so we designed custom cabinetry that could close off the coffee nook when not in use. This option reduces visual clutter and incorporates a minimalistic design as you don’t see the machine, coffee cups, sugar, filters, etc. While there are ways to display those items that look aesthetically pleasing as we did Project Canyon Sol, this is your space, and we always want it to reflect you, your style, and your vision.
Key Features of a Hidden Coffee Nook
This coffee nook is cleverly concealed behind custom cabinetry that matches the rest of the kitchen. When closed, the cabinetry seamlessly blends in with the rest of the kitchen design, maintaining a sleek and tidy appearance. Inside the hidden coffee nook, there’s ample space to store the coffee machine, cups, and all other essentials. Everything is organized and out of sight, yet easily accessible.
A hidden coffee bar allows you to maintain a clean and streamlined kitchen without sacrificing functionality, allowing you to enjoy the convenience of a coffee bar without it being a permanent, visible feature in your kitchen. Another key feature of a hidden coffee nook is that it maximizes your counter space, which is particularly useful in smaller kitchens where counter space is limited.
Designing your Coffee Nook
Both open and hidden coffee nooks offer unique benefits, and the right choice depends on your lifestyle, kitchen layout, and personal preferences. Regardless of which one you prefer, your well-designed coffee nook is sure to become one of your favorite spots in the house.
