For this fun project in San Diego’s historic Mission Hills neighborhood, we transformed a modest patio into a multifunctional outdoor retreat. Relocating from the East Coast to embrace Southern California’s year-round sun, our clients, a young family, envisioned this space as their primary outdoor area—one where they could entertain friends, unwind as a family, and watch their young son grow and explore.

The design combines coastal simplicity with distinct zones for lounging, dining, and play. With Essentials for Living and Pottery Barn furnishings, the space exudes a relaxed, coastal vibe.

The layout includes a cozy lounge area with comfortable couches and chaise lounges, perfect for laid-back afternoons or evening get-togethers.

Adjacent is a dining space with a large table, where the family can enjoy meals al fresco or entertain friends under the open sky. Essentials for Living provided timeless, versatile pieces that perfectly complement the coastal aesthetic.

Thoughtfully leaving open space within the design, the patio allows the couple’s toddler room to wander and play safely, creating a family-friendly setting that doesn’t compromise style.

Accents like umbrellas, pillows, and lanterns from Pottery Barn add texture and charm, with soft, beach-inspired hues and natural materials that enhance the coastal feel. The outdoor rug anchors the space and ties the whole look together.
